Chapter 1: A Brief History of the Internet
Internet originated roughly in the 1960s, commissioned by the United States government in collaboration with private commercial interests to build robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed computer networks. However, it really picked up steam in 1980s when the government funding was increased and it also attracted a lot more funding from other commercial organizations. About a decade later, many commercial companies had started to make use of this new technology.
As of 2011 more than 2.2 billion people (nearly a third of Earth's Human population) use the Internet. Some of the very well known companies were founded in the following years:
